This template generates an external link to the catalogue of the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) in London, England.

It allows a link from biographical articles to the NPG's list of portraits of that person.

Usage

No parameters (uses data from Wikidata):

One parameter:

{{NPG name | ID }}

{{NPG name | id= ID }}

Two parameters:

{{NPG name | ID | NAME }}

{{NPG name | id= ID | name= NAME }}

Instructions

1. Go to npg.org.uk and search for the person you want
2. Click on the correct link to go to the details of a picture of the person you want. Be sure you are getting the right person
3. Below the picture and its details, the sitter and the artist should both be listed.
4. Click on the link for the sitter
5. The page URL should look like:

   http://www.npg.org.uk/live/search/person.asp?LinkID=mp{{#if:|{{#ifexpr:({{#time:U|{{{3}}}}} - {{#time:U|now}}) > 0|#####|#####}}|#####}}

   where "#####" indicates a number.

6. Copy ONLY that number (be sure to remove the "mp" and to keep all the zeros)
7. Add to the external links section the text:

   {{NPG name|id=#####|name=Name}}

   where "#####" is the number you've copied, and "Name" is the person's name

1. Searching for "Harold Wilson", you will reach this page:

2. Click on the link for the first picture
3. Below the thumbnail picture, you will see the hyperlinked text:

   Sitter: (James) Harold Wilson, Baron Wilson of Rievaulx (1916-1995), Prime Minister.

4. Click on the link
5. The page URL should look like:

6. Copy "04868" (be sure to remove the "mp" and to keep all the zeros)
7. Add to the external links section the text:

Note that, since this will almost certainly go on the external link section, you should add a * before the template text to include it as a list item.
